Dr. Giuliano Garofolo is a veterinarian and director of the National Reference Laboratory for Campylobacter at the Istituto Zooprofilattico Sperimentale dell’Abruzzo e del Molise “G. Caporale”. He is responsible for overseeing bacteriological diagnostics and molecular identifications and typing of pathogenic bacteria. Dr. Garofolo has over 15 years of experience in food safety and highly pathogenic bacteria research, with a particular interest in the molecular evolution of bacteria to understand their spread over time and space. His studies primarily focus on the application of new methodologies such as MLVA, MLST, WGS, and metagenomics to monitor diseases and epidemics. He is responsible for coordinating the Italian network for Campylobacter and Yersinia data, validating official data, and overseeing research and development, both nationally and internationally.
In the past five years, Dr. Garofolo has been involved in several areas of scientific research, including the validation of EU data for Campylobacter, writing the chapter on Campylobacter for the EFSA ECDC EUOHZ report, and the molecular typing of Campylobacter, Brucella, and Salmonella. He has also conducted research in the fields of bioinformatics, antibiotic resistance, biosafety, and the management of national and international projects.
In addition to his research and laboratory work, Dr. Garofolo is actively involved in training and educating the next generation of scientists. He has conducted national and international training sessions, collaborated with international organizations such as the WOAH, FAO, and IAEA, and published numerous articles in international journals. His extensive research contributions have been recognized with an h-index of 18 according to the SCOPUS citation database.
